Google is undoubtedly the largest search engine, and quite literally, the face of the internet. Just the other day, in August 2016, Google finally announced a mega algorithm update engrossed on obtrusive interstitials that are poised to roll on from January 10, 2017. For all you digital marketers out there, by simply ignoring this update, your Google’s search engine results pages – SERPs, will be severely affected.
For the average minds, it is any hindrances that often interrupt what a visitor to your page expects to see. You may have met those disgusting ads that interrupt your experience when reading something on the web.

- And, Intrusive standalone interstitials of two types
As highlighted by Google, they may appear as:
- A popup covering the entire content while still looking through the page or once the user immediately moves to another page.
- A standalone that the user must dismiss before accessing the content
- A layout within which the above-the-fold portion resembles the independent, but the original content is blurred
Google is right to penalize the popups; here’s the reason
As the leading search engine, Google is committed to a seamless browsing experience, a factor that has been lost nowadays. The new algorithm will bring that back while helping users locate useful and relevant content that befits specific search criteria with ease.
Will all the intrusions remain penalized?
Safe for the useful popups like the:
- Ones that highlight the legal obligations like the cookie usage and user verification
- All login dialogs on those sites whose content aren’t indexed including emails
- Banners that require a reasonable screen space and can easily be dismissed
All the rest will, therefore, remain banned forever.
And, is the move necessary?
There’s no doubt that mobile is the future, and data is indisputable. As the statistics show, more people are using their mobile devices to access the web today, and any savvy technocrat knows how important the update is. Ignore it at your personal peril!
For your popups, do the following:
- Take a toll of all the popups that you have – use SumoMe or LeadPages for simplicity.
- Vet them to ascertain if indeed they meet the new set of rules.
- Create better alternative strategies so that they conform to the new directives.
- Implement the techniques.
- Do the tests until you are satisfied that all systems are ready to roll
- Remember, January 10, 2017, is the final day.

Perhaps the first of the major algorithmic enhancements meant at increasing the usage of responsive mobile websites and designs, the aim of creating a memorable experience was achieved. Of course, the algorithms are complex, and their determinants change weight frequently. So, the most recent update, Google is, once again, using mobile-friendly websites to determine the rank of sites.

- Use Google tools to “Analyze” and know if your website is mobile friendly.
